Information for Crew

Prerequisites for participating on a voyage
-
The main prerequisite is to share the same passion for sailing and exploring remote corners of our planet, without leaving an environmental or other footprint.
-
Sailing competency is also a prerequisite, not for the skills themselves, but mostly to make sure that you will be an equal member of a fully functional team sharing the same goals and therefore living in harmony.
-
Being very responsible and well organized are also prerequisites for navigating at sea, and living with other people in a small space.
Main activities on board
In total we should will be a crew of 3-5 people, mixed male/ female, and multicultural. Similarly to most sailing boats, our on board activities include:
-
Active participation in all yacht navigation activities including at the helm, sail trimming, checking the weather, the maps etc.
-
Creative participation in all life aboard activities including organising, budgeting, shopping for food provisions, cooking, and cleaning.
-
Problem solving relevant to equipment failures or to passage difficulties.
-
Making sure the morale is high, for each one of us
When there are night passages, we usually have 2-3 hour watch periods, with 1-2 people on deck depending on weather and traffic conditions. Watches are allocated fairly and equally across all.
We will be working as a team, with many social moments but also with plenty of individual time for each one to read our books, take photos, listen to our music, or just relax alone at the bow (weather permitting!).
The mood aboard should always be relaxed yet in control. We never shout and are always respectful and patient with each other. We always do our best to keep the boat in perfect condition, tidy and clean.
Costs involved
Crew positions are unpaid, so the absence from your onshore job might be the biggest cost for you. The cost of the yacht itself, its insurance, equipment, wear & tear, damages etc, are taken care by the captain.
We usually share the following costs, by contribution to a boat kitty:
-
Onboard food provisions, which usually amount to around 10 eur per person-day.
-
Mooring costs, these depend on the region. For example, in a mediterranean route, and with many nights at marinas (eg 70%) at a daily cost of 60-80 eur, the daily cost per person could be up to 10-15 eur, for a crew of four.
-
Fuel, mainly to encourage the use of our sails, instead of the engine! In any case, this should be minimal.
Each crew member should have his own medical insurance, making sure that it does cover a possible medical treatment in all countries visited, just in case. For participation in rallies, the boat fee is taken care by the captain, while crew fees are undertaken by each member. Finally, possible immigration costs and entry formalities, if any, are also a consideration for each crew member to take care of individually.
We can discuss individual needs & situations, flexibility is needed both ways.
